South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has firmly rejected calls for his resignation following an impeachment inquiry linked to the controversial Phala Phala farm scandal, insisting that there is no constitutional basis for his removal from office.

The 73-year-old leader has been under intense political pressure after allegations emerged that he concealed a 2020 burglary at his luxury Phala Phala game farm located in Limpopo Province, where large sums of foreign currency were reportedly hidden inside furniture on the property.

The allegations sparked widespread debate across South Africa’s political landscape, with opposition parties and critics questioning the source of the money and accusing the president of failing to properly report the incident to law enforcement and tax authorities.
However, in a nationally televised address, President Ramaphosa maintained his innocence and expressed confidence in the country’s judicial process. He stated that there was nothing in the Constitutional Court ruling delivered on Friday that justified impeachment proceedings or warranted his resignation from office.
Ramaphosa emphasized his commitment to transparency, accountability and constitutional governance, noting that South Africa’s democratic institutions must be respected and allowed to function independently without political manipulation.
The president further assured citizens that his administration remains focused on addressing key national priorities, including economic recovery, unemployment, energy reforms and the fight against corruption.
Political analysts believe the Phala Phala controversy could continue to shape South Africa’s political climate ahead of future elections, as opposition parties intensify pressure on the ruling African National Congress government.
Despite the mounting criticism, Ramaphosa’s supporters argue that the president has demonstrated resilience and remains committed to stabilizing Africa’s most industrialized economy while preserving democratic institutions and investor confidence in the country.
