A coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilantes, and hunters has successfully foiled what authorities have described as one of the most significant counterterrorism operations in recent times, preventing the mass abduction of students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Kogi State.
The operation, which took place on Wednesday in Iluke-Bunu, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, thwarted a planned terrorist attack by a large group of heavily armed bandits who had reportedly targeted a secondary school where students were writing their WAEC examinations.
According to reports, more than 80 armed bandits riding over 40 motorcycles stormed the community at about 10:00 a.m. with the intention of abducting scores of students and residents.
Security sources indicated that the attackers had carefully coordinated their operation and intended to move their victims into nearby forests before security agencies could respond.
However, in a swift and decisive response, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade engaged the invading terrorists before they could execute their mission. The soldiers were immediately reinforced by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilantes and hunters, leading to a fierce confrontation that forced the criminals to abandon their plans and flee.
The superior firepower and coordinated efforts of the security operatives ensured that not a single student was abducted, averting what could have become a major national tragedy.
Security reports revealed that the operation resulted in the elimination of two notorious terrorist commanders identified as Dantijo and his second-in-command, Danbaba, both of whom had allegedly coordinated criminal activities across Kogi, Kwara, Niger and other parts of Northern Nigeria.
Sources further disclosed that several fleeing terrorists sustained varying degrees of injuries during the encounter, while ongoing clearance operations have continued to record additional successes. Security personnel pursuing the retreating criminals reportedly neutralized more insurgents between Wednesday and Thursday.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who visited the affected community on Thursday for an on-the-spot assessment, confirmed the security gains and commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the various security agencies involved in the operation.
The Governor reassured residents that his administration remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that Kogi State would continue to deny criminal elements any foothold within its territory.
Addressing residents during the visit, Governor Ododo vowed that the state would relentlessly pursue those responsible for the attack and ensure that every criminal operating within or around Kogi’s borders faces the full consequences of their actions.
He emphasized that while criminal elements may attempt to infiltrate the state in large numbers, security forces remain prepared to confront and defeat them.
Governor Ododo also sympathized with the families of the three victims who lost their lives during the unfortunate incident, describing their deaths as painful sacrifices in the collective effort to keep communities safe from criminal elements.
The latest security success has once again drawn attention to Kogi State’s evolving security architecture, which many observers attribute to sustained investments in intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, logistics support and community participation in security management.
Security analysts note that Kogi’s strategic location, sharing boundaries with ten states and serving as a major gateway between Northern and Southern Nigeria, presents unique security challenges.
Despite these challenges, the state has continued to strengthen its security framework through enhanced support for security agencies, recruitment of local vigilantes and active engagement of hunters and community-based intelligence networks.
