President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s hosting of the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) alongside the prestigious CAF Awards Ceremony, a development widely regarded as a major boost for the nation’s sports, tourism and hospitality sectors.

The announcement was made by the President during the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, after a high-level meeting with CAF President, Patrice Motsepe. Also present at the meeting were Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, former NFF President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and CAF Acting General Secretary, Samson Adamu.

The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled for October, will bring together presidents of CAF’s 54 member associations, top football administrators, continental stakeholders and global sports investors from across Africa and beyond.
Nigeria’s selection to host the prestigious events is being viewed as a strong endorsement of the country’s growing influence in African football and a reflection of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to sports development and international engagement.

Analysts believe the hosting rights will significantly stimulate the nation’s economy, especially in the tourism and hospitality industries. With thousands of delegates, football legends, media professionals, sponsors and international visitors expected in Nigeria, hotels, airlines, restaurants, transport operators and entertainment businesses are projected to witness increased patronage during the events.
The CAF Awards Ceremony, known for its glamour and celebration of Africa’s football excellence, is also expected to showcase Nigeria’s rich culture, music, fashion and hospitality to a global audience, further positioning the country as a prime destination for international sporting and entertainment events.
Industry stakeholders say the development could attract future investments in sports infrastructure, youth football development, sports marketing and event management, while creating temporary and long-term employment opportunities for Nigerians.
The hosting of the CAF Congress and Awards is equally expected to strengthen Nigeria’s image as a hub for continental diplomacy, sports tourism and international conferences, reinforcing the country’s leadership role within Africa.
Observers note that beyond football, the events present an opportunity for Nigeria to project soft power, deepen regional cooperation and promote local businesses through increased commercial activities associated with major international gatherings.
With preparations expected to begin in earnest, sports enthusiasts and business operators alike are optimistic that the CAF events will mark another milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward becoming a leading destination for global sporting events in Africa.
