The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has announced that the Executive Bill package for the implementation of state police will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, while briefing journalists after the group’s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Gbajabiamila said the bill is part of the legal framework being developed following the inauguration of the presidential committee by President Tinubu in July to facilitate the establishment of state police across the country.
He explained that although the Executive Bill would first be submitted to the President, it would subsequently undergo a nationwide consultation process to allow stakeholders to make inputs before its transmission to the National Assembly.
According to him, the Working Group has approved a seven-week, milestone-driven work programme running from July 27 to September 14, 2026.
“The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3. Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly,” Gbajabiamila said.
He added that the Working Group is inviting memoranda, position papers and practical proposals from members of the public and other stakeholders to enrich the draft legislation.
Gbajabiamila noted that the national consultation would provide Nigerians with the opportunity to examine and make contributions to the bill’s provisions, including its safeguards, funding proposals and transition arrangements before it is forwarded to the National Assembly.
