Crash Details
The Boeing 737-800 jet, 15 years old, was returning from Bangkok when the crash happened at 9:03 am. The Transport Ministry reported that the plane’s front landing gear failed to deploy, leading to the tragic accident. Footage of the crash showed the plane skidding across the airstrip with its landing gear still closed, colliding head-on with a concrete wall.
Rescue Efforts
Emergency workers pulled two crew members to safety, who are conscious and not in life-threatening condition. The fire agency deployed 32 fire trucks and several helicopters to contain the blaze, with about 1,560 firefighters, police officers, soldiers, and other officials sent to the site.
Investigation Underway
Transport ministry officials are investigating the cause of the crash, considering possibilities such as a bird strike. The airport control tower had issued a bird strike warning to the plane shortly before it intended to land, and the pilot sent out a distress signal shortly before the plane crashed.
International Response
The passengers were predominantly South Korean, with two Thai nationals also on board. The international community has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the people of South Korea.
