What was meant to be the beginning of a lifelong union reportedly came to an abrupt end just two weeks after the wedding, with a luxury SUV at the centre of the controversy.
According to reports making the rounds on social media, a newly married couple identified as Mr. Olukayode and Mrs. Modupeola parted ways after a disagreement over a brand-new Toyota SUV allegedly gifted to the bride by her former employer.
The reports claim that Mrs. Modupeola had worked for a Lebanese-owned company in Ilorin, Kwara State, earning about ₦400,000 monthly before resigning and relocating to Abuja following her marriage.
Barely a week after the wedding, a Toyota SUV reportedly valued at more than ₦70 million was allegedly delivered to the couple’s residence. The vehicle was said to be a farewell gift from the Managing Director of her former company in appreciation of her service.
Rather than becoming a symbol of celebration, the SUV reportedly became the source of a serious marital dispute.
Mr. Olukayode, who is said to work as a banker, reportedly objected to accepting such an expensive gift from another man and insisted that it should be returned.
His wife, however, reportedly maintained that the vehicle was an official farewell benefit from her former employer and not a personal gift. She was also said to have argued that similar gifts had been presented to other employees who left the company.
The disagreement reportedly escalated despite attempts by the couple’s pastor and the head of the groom’s family to broker peace. According to the accounts, both parties remained firm in their positions, and the marriage eventually collapsed just two weeks after the couple exchanged vows.
Although the story has yet to be independently verified and neither of the individuals involved has publicly commented on the matter, it has ignited intense debate across social media.
While some believe the husband acted out of principle and concern for the marriage, others argue that the wife had every right to keep what she considered a legitimate employment benefit.
Based on the reports, one question remains: Should a marriage end over a gift, or should compromise have come before pride?
