In a significant development, Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has announced his intention to switch allegiance from Germany to Nigeria, reports Agu’s decision follows a growing trend of players with Nigerian heritage choosing to represent the Super Eagles.

Born in Osnabruck, Germany, on September 27, 1999, Agu’s father is Nigerian, while his mother is German. Despite representing Germany at the Under-21 level, Agu has now set his sights on playing for Nigeria. With four goals and eight assists in 88 appearances for Werder Bremen, Agu has demonstrated his skills as a left-back.

In an interview with Oma TV, Agu expressed his desire to play for Nigeria, stating, “To play on the national level was always a dream of mine… I’ve talked a lot to Justin Njimah about playing for the national team, and we think it would be like a dream come true to play for Nigeria.” Agu also highlighted the importance of making his father proud by representing Nigeria.

Agu’s declaration offers the Super Eagles an additional option at left-back, a position currently occupied by Bruno Onyemaechi. While Agu may not be playing at the highest level yet, his skills and experience could make him a viable alternative for coach Eric Chelle to consider.

Agu’s decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria follows in the footsteps of other players, including Maduka Okoye, William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo, Ademola Lookman, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who have all chosen to represent Nigeria over other countries. As the Super Eagles continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Agu’s addition could provide a welcome boost to the team.
