In a significant move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, convened a high-level meeting with former Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), to deliberate on the formation of a proposed political coalition.

The closed-door meeting, which took place in Abuja, is believed to be part of ongoing consultations among prominent political actors seeking to realign forces ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gathering underscores rising momentum for a third force or alternative political bloc that could challenge the dominance of the two major parties in Nigeria.

According to insider sources, discussions focused on the need for a coalition that reflects the aspirations of Nigerians yearning for credible leadership, national unity, and inclusive governance. The trio, all known for their strong ideological leanings and reformist credentials, reportedly exchanged views on key policy areas, governance strategies, and shared visions for Nigeria’s future.

Although details of the meeting remain confidential, political observers view the engagement as a potential catalyst for a broader alliance that may include technocrats, civil society actors, and other political stakeholders disenchanted with the current political structure.

Analysts also note the significance of El-Rufai’s role as convener, given his growing profile as a strategic thinker and power broker with influence across regional and political divides.

More meetings are expected in the coming weeks as consultations intensify toward building a formidable coalition capable of offering Nigerians a viable alternative in the next electoral cycle.
