Assembly Stands Firm on January 13 Decision
The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its unwavering support for its new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, emphasizing that the impeachment of former Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa remains valid and unshaken. In a statement issued by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, the lawmakers stressed their commitment to good governance and harmonious relationships among the arms of government.
The Assembly, which took a decisive majority vote on January 13 to impeach Rt. Hon. Obasa, reiterated its readiness to defend this decision, asserting that nothing has changed.
“As elected representatives of the people of Lagos, we are duty-bound to uphold good governance and foster peace within our state. The decision to remove the former Speaker was a collective one, and we remain united behind Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda,” the statement read.
The Assembly described the position of the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obasa, as “uncalled for and unparliamentary,” calling on him to respect the will of the majority. The legislators emphasized that all members, elected from various constituencies across Lagos State, possess the statutory authority to make decisions, including the removal of principal officers.
“Majority members of the House elected Rt. Hon. Obasa as Speaker for the 10th Assembly. However, the same majority decided to remove him and elect Rt. Hon. Meranda as the new Speaker. The process was in line with statutory orders, and we stand firmly by our decision,” Hon. Ogundipe stated.
The statement appealed to the former Speaker to embrace peace and align with the majority’s decision, warning against any actions that could destabilize the Assembly and the state at large.
“I appeal to the former Speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony, as others have. His current stance could unnecessarily heat up the polity, which will not benefit anyone. The majority of members who elected Rt. Hon. Meranda will resist any attempts to disrupt the stability we seek to maintain,” the statement concluded.
The Lagos State House of Assembly remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and progressive legislative environment under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.
