A devastating plane crash occurred at Muan International Airport in South Korea, resulting in the loss of 179 lives. The Jeju Air passenger plane, carrying 181 people, skidded off the runway, slammed into a concrete fence, and burst into flames after its front landing gear apparently failed to deploy.

Crash Details

The Boeing 737-800 jet, 15 years old, was returning from Bangkok when the crash happened at 9:03 am. The Transport Ministry reported that the plane’s front landing gear failed to deploy, leading to the tragic accident. Footage of the crash showed the plane skidding across the airstrip with its landing gear still closed, colliding head-on with a concrete wall.

Rescue Efforts

Emergency workers pulled two crew members to safety, who are conscious and not in life-threatening condition. The fire agency deployed 32 fire trucks and several helicopters to contain the blaze, with about 1,560 firefighters, police officers, soldiers, and other officials sent to the site.

Investigation Underway

Transport ministry officials are investigating the cause of the crash, considering possibilities such as a bird strike. The airport control tower had issued a bird strike warning to the plane shortly before it intended to land, and the pilot sent out a distress signal shortly before the plane crashed.

International Response

The passengers were predominantly South Korean, with two Thai nationals also on board. The international community has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the people of South Korea.

Safety Concerns

This tragic incident raises concerns about aviation safety in South Korea. The government has promised a thorough investigation and will take necessary measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
